Celebrate the Life of Awana Co-founder Arthur Reynold Rorheim
Arthur Reynold Rorheim, the co-founder of the Awana clubs, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 5, 2017. He was 99 years old. He served in active ministry for 70 of those years. Today, Awana serves more than four million children in 104 countries. That is a legacy worth celebrating! Rorheim believed in the value of biblical education for children and endeavored to give young people every opportunity to study and meditate on the Word of God.
Please join in celebrating the life of Arthur Reynold Rorheim and committing to carry on his vision of childhood discipleship and scripture memorization.
“In 1941, the children's program at the North Side Gospel Center in Chicago laid the foundation for the principles of Awana. Lance Latham, North Side's senior pastor, collaborated with the church's youth director, Art Rorheim, to develop weekly clubs that would appeal to churched and nonchurched kids. As a pioneer in children’s ministry, Art created new and innovative ways to reach kids with the gospel and lead them to know, love and serve Jesus Christ. Other churches learned about the success of the program and inquired about its availability. In 1950, Latham and Rorheim founded Awana as a parachurch organization.” (Awana website)
Rorheim’s desire was simple: teach children to memorize scripture and meditate on the Word of God. But he was also creative. Awana is no stale, boring, Sunday school class, but a fun club that features full energy games, fun songs, delightful prizes, and creative stories that kids look forward to the whole week.
As the Awana website states, “Kids represent the greatest opportunity to make a long-term impact on our world for Christ. Awana establishes welcoming, supportive environments where kids, from every background and cultural setting, learn how a personal relationship with Christ affects their everyday lives.”
Through Awana, two generations of Christians have learned to study scripture in a way that is fun and formative. If you are interested in finding a club for your family to participate in, click here.
As a child who grew up in the Awana programs, I can testify first-hand the value training children in the Word of God. I began my journey of faith as a Sparky, and today my faith in Christ is stronger than ever.
If possible, consider attending his visitation and home going service which will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 11am at Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church. More details here.
